Activists plan to demonstrate outside the Embassy of Singapore in Jakarta from 13:00 May 20 to denounce the Singaporean authorities’ decision to deny entry to the prominent Indonesian Islamic preacher Abdul Somad. Protesters are also demanding the Indonesian government investigate the incident.
The Singaporean government denied Somad entry due to his alleged discriminatory remarks in his sermons; Somad’s supporters, like the Alumni Brotherhood (PA) 212, claim the decision was Islamophobic and an insult to Indonesia. Dozens to hundreds of people will likely participate in the action.
Authorities have imposed increased security measures at the Singaporean Embassy and its surrounding areas in the lead up to the protest. Localized road closures and business disruptions are likely, especially if activists occupy nearby streets; nearby facilities include the Dutch, Hungarian, Polish, Thai, and Turkish embassies and government buildings like the health and manpower ministries. Clashes are possible if authorities forcibly disperse any demonstrations or if protesters attempt to breach any security barriers.
