STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT. As the dust settles over the 2024 Indonesian general election, Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka have claimed victory as the next president and vice president. The former three-star general and the son of the incumbent president have promised to continue President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s ambitious economic development and legacy infrastructure projects, including moving the administrative capital from Jakarta to Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan.
This relocation project is not just a political move to secure the legacy of President Jokowi. With some strategic consideration, Prabowo could turn the new capital city and its surrounding maritime domain into a new regional — and even global — maritime hub. The government is planning to build two ports within the vicinity of IKN, Kuala Samboja and Marangkayu, which will support the development of logistics and industries around the area.
The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) is collaborating with ACWA Power for the construction and development of green power plants at Indonesia’s new capital city in East Kalimantan..
President Director of OIKN-owned enterprise PT Bina Karya, Boyke P. Soebroto, welcomed the collaboration with the Saudi Arabian company and expressed hope that it would be followed up immediately.
“Next week, we will hold a meeting to ensure that ACWA Power Indonesia’s participation in IKN development can be implemented immediately,” Soebroto remarked in Jakarta.
Jokowi said that the meeting covered political and defense issues, specifically the agreement on the re-alignment of the flight information region (FIR). He also praised the enthusiasm of 29 Singapore companies for investing in the development of solar power plants in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
President Jokowi signed the ratification of Law No. 2/2024 on the Jakarta Special Region, which outlines the transition process of the capital status from Jakarta to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan. As per the copy of the law, Article 1 (1) stipulates that the Jakarta Special Region is a provincial region with distinct specialties in the administration of government.
According to Article 63, Jakarta shall maintain its status as the capital until a presidential decree on the relocation of the capital is issued.
