STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT. President Jokowi at the inaugural ceremony for the National Leadership Council of the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) asked entrepreneurs to be careful in choosing future leaders because the fate of Indonesia will be determined by the national leadership from 2024 to 2034. In this event, former Vice President Jusuf Kalla and the Central Java Governor as well as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo, were present.
According to the findings of pollster Denny J.A.’s Lingkaran Survei Indonesia (LSI), Prabowo Subianto outperformed almost all political party voters. Ganjar Pranowo, according to the pollster, performed best among PDI-P voters. Prabowo performed best among Muslim voters, while Ganjar performed best among non-Muslim voters.
Similarly, Prabowo is said to be superior among both male and female voters. Prabowo performed well in Sumatra, Central Indonesia, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, while Ganjar performed well in Java and Eastern Indonesia.
In response to the low electability of the prospective presidential candidate Anies Baswedan, Former Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla alluded to the victory of the 45th U.S. President Donald Trump in the 2016 election, which also had very low electability but managed to win.
He said electability calculations often occur ahead of elections. However, there are trends that are not too influential because they are only determined based on a limited number of respondents. He then mentioned the Jakarta governor election when Anies won despite low electability.
All Golkar Party’s provincial branches have declared their support for Airlangga Hartarto, strengthening his position amid a tumultuous moment in which some party members have suggested overthrowing him as party chairman ahead of next year’s presidential and legislative elections.
In a closed-door meeting in Bali, party leaders from all provincial branches rejected the initiative to hold an extraordinary party congress to replace Airlangga before his term ends in 2024. Former Golkar Party chairperson Jusuf Kalla said that a split within the party could affect the number of votes in the 2024 elections. He then urged the Golkar Party to unite to win the 2024 elections, which will take place in less than a year.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has issued an ultimatum that party members must rally behind its presidential nominee Ganjar Pranowo or face expulsion. “Members defecting [from the party] by supporting other candidates are welcome to resign or face dismissal,” PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto.
He did not mention specific cases of disloyalty. The ultimatum came after three prominent ruling party members made headlines in recent months for appearing to support another presumptive presidential candidate, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who will likely compete with Ganjar for the country’s top office next year.
Presidential candidate and Gerindra Party Chair Prabowo Subianto visited the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) headquarters on Wednesday. He invited PSI to join the Greater Indonesia Awakening Coalition (KKIR) in the face of the 2024 elections. Prabowo believes that PSI has similar visions and missions with him. Golkar Party Chair Airlangga Hartarto emphasized that his party would only provide support for the presidential candidate from the Gerindra Party, Prabowo Subianto, or the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Ganjar Pranowo. He said Golkar would not support Anies Baswedan’s presidential candidate for the Coalition for Change.
In response to the statement of former vice president Jusuf Kalla, who said the party was too dependent on the authorities in its political policies, Airlangga said Golkar is a big party which also takes its own steps.
K-pop lovers in Indonesia have panned presidential hopeful Ganjar Pranowo for proposing to host a concert in Central Java, seemingly aimed at wooing young voters ahead of next year’s general election.
K-pop fans also accused Ganjar of capitalising on the genre to score political mileage and lacking “quality ideas”, suggesting he give local singers a chance to showcase their work.
According to the latest Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) survey, 40.6 percent of respondents believe President Jokowi supports Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo as a presidential candidate for 2024, while 28.3 percent believe Jokowi supports Prabowo Subianto and 11.9 percent believe Anies Baswedan.
SMRC founder Saiful Mujani unveiled the importance of President Jokowi’s support for presidential candidates, saying the president’s support was important because voter satisfaction with Jokowi’s performance was extremely high.
The ongoing spat over Anies Baswedan’s running mate between the political parties grouped in the Coalition of Change for Unity (KPP) continues to drag on, even after the former Jakarta governor said he had settled on his pick, highlighting the fragile state of the three-way electoral alliance.
Bickering between the pro-government NasDem Party and opposition parties Democratic Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) over their vice presidential pick again erupted this week, less than two months after Anies teased that he had made his choice.
